Case IH F-518694-09 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Vehicle Controller: CAN timeout error from exhaust flap actuator
Issue description
CAN communication failure between the vehicle controller and the ECU. The FMI 09 identifier specifically points to an abnormal update rate or timeout, meaning the smart controller inside the exhaust flap actuator has stopped communicating with the network, or the signal is lost.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- CR/CX Series Combines
- Vestrum Series (Vestrum 100, 110, 120, 130)
Check the cause
Check the presence and correct connection of the Exhaust Flap Actuator to the CAN network. Inspect the wiring for a disconnected or broken CAN cable, and check for a short circuit in the voltage supply.
Verify that the actuator is not suffering from undervoltage, which can cause the CAN controller to drop offline.
Turn the key OFF and manually move the exhaust flap actuator. Ensure the actuator moves through its full stroke with little resistance.
If the actuator is stuck partially closed or exhibits increased resistance/friction, check for carbon build-up on the exhaust flap.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn the machine off and ensure the key is in the OFF position.
Inspect Wiring
Thoroughly inspect the wiring harness leading to the exhaust flap actuator. Repair any broken wires, clean corroded pins, and ensure the connector is firmly seated to restore CAN communication.
Free the Mechanism
If the manual stroke test revealed binding, clean any carbon build-up from the exhaust flap to free the actuator.
Replace Actuator
If the wiring and voltage supply are intact, and the flap is not mechanically bound by carbon, the actuator's internal CAN controller has likely failed. Replace the exhaust flap actuator assembly.
Validation
After cleaning the flap or replacing the actuator, run the engine under full load for 1 hour to check for symptom reoccurrence and verify the repair.
