Case IH F-518694-11 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Exhaust flap sticking or internal failure

The Engine Control Unit has received a CAN message from the exhaust flap's smart actuator reporting a control failure or actuation error. The exhaust flap is physically jammed, sticking, or has suffered an internal mechanical/electrical failure.

   Verify the CAN configuration and communication to the Exhaust Flap smart actuator.

   Inspect the exhaust flap supply voltage and wiring harness for shorts, high resistance, or physical damage.

   Use the electronic diagnostic service tool to perform an 'exhaust flap test' to see if the actuator is correctly moving or if it binds during operation.

   Check for heavy soot/carbon buildup or physical obstructions in the exhaust pipe that could cause the flap to jam mechanically.

   Prep the Machine

   Turn off the engine, allow the exhaust system to cool completely, and disconnect the battery ground cable.

   Disconnect Electricals

   Disconnect the wiring harness and electrical connectors from the exhaust flap actuator.

   Remove Hardware

   Loosen and remove the exhaust clamp or retaining bolts connecting the exhaust pipe to the exhaust flap (typically located between the turbocharger and the DOC/SCR catalyst).

   Remove the Flap

   Carefully remove the exhaust flap assembly and exhaust front pipe.

   Install New Part

   Position the new exhaust flap actuator into place and secure it with the exhaust clamp/retaining bolts.

   Reconnect

   Reconnect the electrical connector to the smart actuator and reconnect the battery ground cable.

   Calibrate/Test

   Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool and run an active exhaust flap test to verify proper movement and ensure no binding occurs.
