Case IH F-519044-03 - ECU – ECM / DCU / BCM: DEF/AdBlue quality sensor internal failure (Temperature sensor circuit short to battery)

The control module has detected a voltage on the DEF/AdBlue quality sensor's temperature circuit that is higher than the expected maximum threshold, specifically a 'short to battery'. Because the temperature sensor is integrated internally into the DEF quality sensor unit, the system flags this as an internal component failure, preventing accurate reporting of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid temperature.

   Verify the Code Source: Use a diagnostic tool to confirm whether the fault is coming from the ECM (Emissions/DEF) or the BCM (Cab A/C system).

   Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the DEF/AdBlue tank quality sensor. Look for chafing, melted wires, or corrosion that could cause the temperature signal wire to short to a 12V/24V power source.

   Voltage Test: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the voltage at the harness connector pins. If battery voltage is present on the temperature signal return pin, the harness is shorted. If the harness voltages are correct (typically a 5V reference), the short is internal to the sensor.

   Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying codes such as CAN timeout errors from the DEF quality sensor (e.g., DTC 9AEA / 19144) or DEF tank temperature plausibility faults (e.g., DTC 4DCA / 19142), which further isolate the sensor unit.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the DEF/AdBlue quality sensor, which is mounted directly on or inside the DEF/AdBlue tank assembly.

   Disconnect and Remove

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Clean the area around the sensor mounting point to prevent dirt from falling into the DEF tank. Unbolt and carefully remove the failed DEF quality sensor.

   Install New Sensor

   Insert the replacement DEF quality sensor into the tank, ensuring the sealing O-ring is properly seated. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.
