Case IH F-5246-15 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Aftertreatment SCR Operator Inducement Severity: High - least severe (1)
Issue description
The engine control system has detected an emissions-related fault or a tampering condition (such as a disconnected emissions sensor, empty DEF tank, or poor DEF quality) and is actively warning the operator. This Level 1 inducement typically triggers a warning light and an initial engine de-rate to force the operator to repair the emissions system.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- MX / TG Series Tractors
- Farmall Tractors (40-45-50 with CVT)
- Austoft 9900 Sugarcane Harvesters
Check the cause
Do not attempt to troubleshoot the 5246-15 code directly, as it is a reactionary inducement code.
Scan for root cause codes using a diagnostic tool to find the underlying emissions fault (e.g., DEF pump pressure, DEF quality, or disconnected NOx sensors).
Check the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/AdBlue) tank level and fluid quality, ensuring no diesel fuel has been mixed into the DEF tank.
Inspect the SCR system wiring harnesses for unplugged connectors, chafing, or physical tampering.
Repair steps
Repair the Root Cause
Address the primary emissions fault identified during the diagnostic scan (e.g., replace a failed DEF pump, drain contaminated DEF, or repair a broken sensor wire).
Reset the Inducement Counter
Once the physical failure causing the inducement is repaired, the F-5246-15 code will not clear on its own. The inducement lock must be reset.
Perform UDS Service Reset
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Navigate to the engine diagnostics menu and execute the specific routine control to reset the locked override counter (often labeled as 'Reset the severe deactivation counter' or Id. $029F).
Clear Codes and Test
Cycle the ignition key. Verify that the F-5246-15 code changes from Active to Inactive, clear the codes, and run the engine to ensure full power is restored without de-rate.
