F-5246-16 - ECU

Case IH F-5246-16 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Info: SCR Inducement: Level 1 (Torque reduction), triggered by Tampering fault

Issue description

This is an informational and regulatory derate code indicating that the engine control system has detected a critical issue with the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) / Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) emissions system that it classifies as a 'tampering' fault, activating a Level 1 Inducement which enforces an engine torque reduction.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Axial-Flow 240 Series (7240, 8240, 9240)
  • Steiger
  • Magnum
  • Optum
  • Puma
  • Farmall series (Farmall 40-50 CVT)

Check the cause

  1. Scan for Root Cause Codes: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and pull all active fault codes to find the accompanying root cause code (e.g., NOx sensor, DEF dosing, or DEF quality faults).

  2. Visual Inspection: Check the SCR system wiring harnesses, DEF dosing valve, and NOx sensors for physical damage, corrosion, or actual tampering (disconnected plugs).

  3. Fluid Check: Verify that the DEF tank is full and that the fluid is not contaminated with diesel or water, which frequently triggers tampering/quality codes.

Repair steps

  1. Diagnose the Root Cause

Identify the accompanying fault code found during the diagnostic scan.

  2. Perform the Primary Repair

Fix the underlying issue (e.g., replace a failed NOx sensor, clean a clogged DEF dosing valve, or drain and refill contaminated DEF).

  3. Clear Codes

Clear the root cause fault code using the diagnostic tool. Note that F-5246-16 cannot be cleared manually; it is locked by the ECU.

  4. Inducement Validation Restart

Perform an 'Inducement Validation Restart' or a forced SCR regeneration via the CNH EST. The engine must run under specific parameters so the ECU can test the SCR system.

  5. Healing

Once the ECU verifies the emissions system is functioning correctly, the 'repeated offender logic' is satisfied, the F-5246-16 code will automatically heal, and full engine torque will be restored.
