Case IH F-5394-03 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU) / Aftertreatment Control Module: DEF/AdBlue dosing valve actuator short circuit to battery failure

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit controlling the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) dosing valve actuator is receiving unintended battery voltage (a short to a high source) on the high side of the circuit. This prevents the actuator from properly metering urea into the exhaust stream, which will eventually lead to an engine derate or power loss due to high NOx emissions.

Check the cause

  1. Verify service history to ensure the error was not falsely triggered by disconnecting the DEF dosing valve with the Key ON

  2. Inspect the DEF dosing valve and its mounting boss for physical damage, severe corrosion, or crystallized DEF buildup

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU/DCU and the DEF dosing valve for chafing, melting, or exposed wires that could be shorting to a 12V/24V power source

  4. Disconnect the DEF dosing valve and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins

  5. With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check for a short circuit to battery voltage on the high side of the dosing valve wiring

  6. Use a diagnostic service tool (like Case IH EST) to run a DEF dosing valve control test (UDVC/UDST) to monitor the electrical command and response

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition key and disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical spikes or generating false codes during the repair.

  2. Access the Valve

    Locate the DEF dosing valve on the exhaust SCR aftertreatment system.

  3. Isolate the Short

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the DEF dosing valve. If your multimeter test (from the diagnostic steps) showed battery voltage on the harness side with the key on, the wiring harness is shorted and must be repaired or replaced.

  4. Remove the Valve

    If the wiring tests good, the short circuit is internal to the DEF dosing valve actuator. Remove the DEF pressure line hose (check for blockages while removed).

  5. Unbolt the Actuator

    Unbolt and remove the defective DEF dosing valve from the mounting boss.

  6. Install New Part

    Install the new DEF dosing valve and secure it to the mounting boss.

  7. Reconnect

    Reconnect the DEF pressure line and the electrical connector.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. Run a DEF dosing system prime and leak test via the service tool to verify proper operation and ensure the code does not return.
