Case IH F-5394-04 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF/AdBlue dosing valve actuator short circuit in high side failure
Issue description
The engine's control system has detected that the electrical circuit controlling the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) dosing valve (also known as the AdBlue injector) is receiving unintended high voltage (shorted to the battery/high side). This prevents the valve from opening and closing properly, halting the injection of DEF into the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, which will eventually trigger engine power reduction (limp mode) or a no-start countdown.

Check the cause
Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the ECU to the DEF dosing valve. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation from exhaust heat, or pinched lines that could cause the actuator wire to short against a high-voltage source.
Connector Check: Disconnect the DEF dosing valve and check the electrical pins. Look for corrosion, bent pins, or DEF fluid ingress (crystallization inside the connector), which can bridge connections and cause a short.
Component Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to test the internal resistance of the DEF dosing valve solenoid. If the internal coil is shorted, the valve itself is the point of failure and must be replaced.
Active Diagnostic Test: Use a manufacturer-level diagnostic scan tool to run a dosing valve prime test or active injection test to monitor live voltage data and confirm if the short is active or stored.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, disconnect the negative battery terminal, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely.
Disconnect Electricals
Locate the DEF dosing valve mounted on the exhaust pipe/SCR catalyst assembly and unplug its electrical connector.
Disconnect Fluid Lines
Carefully disconnect the DEF supply line from the valve. Note: Clean up any spilled DEF immediately with warm water, as it is highly corrosive and will crystallize.
Removal
Remove the mounting clamps or bolts securing the dosing valve to the exhaust system and pull the valve out.
Clean the Port
Inspect the mounting port on the exhaust pipe. Clean away any crystallized DEF deposits or soot to ensure the new injector nozzle will not be blocked.
Installation
Install the new DEF dosing valve using a new gasket/seal. Torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.
Reconnection
Reconnect the DEF fluid line and the electrical connector.
System Bleed and Clear
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the F-5394-04 fault code and run a system prime/bleed procedure to pressurize the DEF lines and check for leaks.
