Case IH F-5394-06 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF/AdBlue dosing valve ECU driver overtemperature failure
Issue description
The engine's control module has detected an excessive current draw or a short-to-ground in the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) dosing valve circuit. The excessive current causes the internal ECU driver that controls the valve to overheat, prompting the system to log this fault and likely derate the engine to protect the module from permanent damage.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness from the ECU to the DEF dosing valve. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could be causing a short to ground.
Disconnect the DEF dosing valve and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture (DEF fluid intrusion), or damage.
Test the internal resistance of the DEF dosing valve coil with a multimeter. An internal short in the valve is a primary cause of an ECU driver overtemperature fault.
If available, use the Case IH EST to run the 'AdBlue Dosing Valve Solenoid test' or 'Urea Dosing Valve Check' to monitor the circuit's electrical behavior and verify if the ECU can command the valve without faulting.
Check the DEF dosing valve and exhaust injection port for severe DEF crystallization or blockages, which can sometimes cause the valve to overwork.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the engine, apply the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shock or further ECU damage.
Locate the Valve
Locate the DEF dosing valve mounted on the SCR exhaust catalyst tube.
Disconnect Electrical
Unplug the electrical connector from the dosing valve. Cover the harness connector with a plastic bag and zip-tie it to protect it from DEF spills.
Disconnect Coolant Lines
If the dosing valve is coolant-heated, clamp off the coolant lines to prevent fluid loss. Squeeze the quick-connect holding clips and pull to disconnect the lines from the valve.
Disconnect DEF Line
Squeeze the quick-connect tabs on the DEF supply line and pull it off the valve. Note: Seal the open DEF line immediately to prevent the fluid from crystallizing inside the tube.
Remove the Valve
Remove the mounting hardware (usually V-band clamps or mounting bolts) securing the dosing valve to the exhaust pipe and remove the unit.
Installation
Clean the mounting surface on the exhaust pipe. Install the new DEF dosing valve and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.
Reconnection
Reconnect the DEF supply line, coolant lines, and the electrical connector.
Verification
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use the diagnostic tool to clear the F-5394-06 fault code. Run a 'Diesel Exhaust Fluid Doser Pump Override Test' or system leak test to prime the system and ensure there are no leaks and the code does not return.
