Case IH F-5394-07 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF/AdBlue dosing valve is blocked

Issue description

The fault code F-5394-07 indicates that the DEF/AdBlue dosing valve is blocked. The dosing valve (or doser injector) is responsible for injecting a precise amount of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the exhaust stream ahead of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst. When this valve is blocked, the system cannot deliver the required fluid to reduce NOx emissions. This blockage is most commonly caused by crystallized DEF inside the dosing lines or the injector nozzle, a clogged DEF filter, or a mechanical failure of the valve sticking in the closed position.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Look for white, crystalline DEF deposits around the doser injector and the exhaust pipe connection. Heavy crystallization externally often indicates an internal blockage or leak.

  2. Inspect Dosing Lines: Check the DEF lines for crystallization. This is highly common if the tractor has been sitting idle for extended periods.

  3. Check the DEF Filter: A heavily restricted or blocked DEF filter can cause dosing faults. Verify when the filter was last changed (it should be replaced at every standard service interval).

  4. Heater Valve Check: Ensure the DEF tank heater control valve is not stuck closed. If the DEF is not being heated properly, it can freeze or crystallize in the lines.

  5. Electronic Service Tool (EST) Testing: Use the Case IH EST to run a "dynamic AdBlue/DEF dosing valve control test (UDVC)" or a dynamic urea leakage test to verify if the valve is mechanically stuck closed or if the pump is failing to build pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Valve

    Note: Always allow the machine to sit with the key off for several minutes before beginning work so the DEF system can complete its automatic purge cycle and depressurize. Locate the DEF dosing valve mounted on the exhaust pipe/turbocharger downpipe.

  2. Disconnect Electrical

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector to the dosing valve.

  3. Disconnect Hoses

    Disconnect the DEF supply and return hoses. Note: Squeeze the locking tabs together and pull straight upward on the elbow connectors to release them without breaking the plastic retainers.

  4. Remove the Valve

    Remove the V-band clamp or mounting bolts securing the dosing valve to the exhaust pipe. Remove the blocked valve.

  5. Clean the Port

    Carefully clean the mounting port on the exhaust pipe to remove any built-up DEF crystals. Do not knock large chunks of crystallized DEF into the exhaust stream.

  6. Install New Valve

    Install the replacement DEF dosing valve and secure the clamp/bolts.

  7. Reconnect

    Reconnect the DEF supply and return hoses (ensure the locking tabs click securely into place) and plug in the electrical harness.

  8. Replace Filter

    Replace the main DEF filter, as a blocked doser is often accompanied by a degraded filter.

  9. Clear Codes

    Use the EST diagnostic tool to save the error log, erase the fault codes, and restart the ECU to verify the repair.
