Case IH F-5394-31 - ECU – ECU: DEF/AdBlue dosing valve actuator short circuit to battery in high side failure.

Issue description

The system has detected that the electrical circuit controlling the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) dosing valve (also known as the DEF injector) has shorted to a power source (battery voltage) on the high side of the circuit. Because the voltage on the control circuit is higher than expected, the actuator is unable to open and close properly. This halts the injection of DEF into the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, which will lead to high NOx emissions and an eventual engine derate if not resolved.

Check the cause

  1. Power Down: Turn the key switch to OFF. Crucial: Allow at least 2 minutes to elapse before proceeding so the DEF system can complete its purge cycle and power down.

  2. Wiring Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the ECU/DCU to the DEF dosing valve. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points where the wire might be shorting to a 12V/24V power source.

  3. Connector Check: Disconnect the DEF dosing valve connector. Inspect the pins for corrosion, DEF fluid intrusion (which can cause electrical shorts), or bent terminals.

  4. Voltage/Resistance Test: With the key ON and the valve disconnected, use a multimeter to check the high-side signal wire for unexpected battery voltage. Test the resistance of the DEF dosing valve itself to see if the internal coil is shorted.

  5. Isolate the Fault: If battery voltage is present on the harness side when disconnected from the ECU, the harness is shorted. If the harness tests fine and the fault is active, the internal circuitry of the DEF dosing valve actuator is defective and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and wait for the DEF system purge cycle to complete (minimum 2 minutes). Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Access the Valve

    Locate the DEF dosing valve, which is mounted on the exhaust pipe upstream of the SCR catalyst.

  3. Disconnect Lines

    Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connector from the dosing valve. Depress the release tabs to disconnect the DEF supply line. (Note: Be prepared for minor fluid spillage; clean immediately as DEF is highly corrosive to metal).

  4. Remove the Valve

    Remove the mounting bolts or V-band clamp securing the dosing valve to the exhaust system. Remove the valve and discard the old gasket.

  5. Install New Valve

    Clean the mounting surface on the exhaust. Install the new DEF dosing valve with a new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

  6. Reconnect

    Reattach the DEF supply line until it clicks securely into place. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Test

    Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the F-5394-31 fault code.

  8. Verification

    Run a DEF dosing system test or a forced stationary regeneration to verify that the dosing valve is operating correctly and that there are no exhaust or DEF leaks.
