Case IH F-5441-14 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Exceeded the number of injections for a given engine speed
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors the requested number of fuel injections against the current capability of the fuel injection system. If the ECU determines that the requested number of injections is greater than what the fuel injection system can physically deliver for the current engine speed, this fault is triggered. It can also be triggered by an engine overspeed condition where the engine speed exceeds safe limits (e.g., over 2600 RPM).

Check the cause
Check for operating errors: Verify with the operator if the machine was traveling downhill under a heavy load, which can mechanically push the engine into an overspeed condition.
Check for engine runaway conditions: Inspect the engine for unintended combustible fluids entering the cylinders, such as engine oil leaking past turbocharger seals or fuel leaking continuously from a stuck-open injector.
Inspect the high-pressure fuel system: Evaluate the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors to ensure they have the capability to meet the ECU's requested injection pressures and volumes.
Electrical/Battery check: Verify that the tractor's battery power supply has not been improperly connected to an external power supply, which can cause erratic ECU monitoring.
Repair steps
Address Operator Error
If the fault was caused by downhill travel/overspeed, clear the fault code using a diagnostic service tool and instruct the operator on proper gear selection and braking for downhill operation.
Resolve Engine Runaway
If an engine runaway condition is found, locate the source of the fluid leak. If the turbocharger is leaking oil into the intake, replace the turbocharger. If a fuel injector is stuck open, replace the faulty injector.
Repair the High-Pressure Fuel System
If the ECU determines the fuel system cannot keep up with injection demands (and no overspeed occurred), perform a fuel pressure test. Replace the high-pressure fuel pump or worn fuel injectors if they fail to maintain specified rail pressures.
Clear and Test
After replacing the faulty components, clear the DTCs from the ECU and run the machine under load to verify that the fuel system can meet the requested number of injections without throwing the code.
