Case IH F-5571-11 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel pressure relief valve is open

The Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) is a mechanical safety mechanism located on the high-pressure common fuel rail. Its purpose is to bleed off excess fuel into the return lines to prevent catastrophic damage to the injectors and fuel system if the rail pressure spikes. This code triggers when the system detects that the valve has opened, which can happen because the rail pressure actually exceeded the maximum safe limit or the relief valve's internal spring has weakened or failed.

   Check for associated codes for the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor or the Fuel Metering Unit (M-PROP/FCA), as these can cause pressure spikes that force the PRV open.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the rail pressure sensor and fuel metering unit for shorts, corrosion, or high resistance.

   Perform a fuel return/leakage test by measuring the bypass fuel from the PRV (e.g., a leaking valve might show excessive return volumes like 45ml at idle, 100ml at 2100 RPM, or leak more than 30 drops per minute).

   Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor live data, comparing commanded fuel rail pressure versus actual fuel rail pressure to see if the system is genuinely over-pressurizing.

   Depressurize

   Turn off the engine and allow it to cool. Ensure all high-pressure fuel has dissipated from the rail.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the fuel rail and the area around the PRV to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the high-pressure fuel system.

   Remove the Valve

   Disconnect the fuel return line from the pressure relief valve. Unscrew and remove the faulty PRV from the fuel rail.

   Install the New Valve

   Thread the new PRV into the fuel rail and torque it to the exact OEM specification. Reconnect the fuel return line.

   Bleed the System

   Prime the fuel system to purge any introduced air.

   Software Reset

   Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). The ECU monitors the opening status and duration of the PRV. You must reset the PRV timer/counter using the appropriate routine control service in the software.

   Verification

   Clear the fault codes. Start the engine and perform another leakage test to verify the new valve is holding pressure. Test drive the machine under load to ensure the F-5571-11 code does not return.
