Case IH F-5839-00 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): SCR Inducement: Level 3 (creep mode), triggered by Reagent Consumption fault
Issue description
The system has detected that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF / AdBlue) consumption is too low, interrupted, or absent. Because the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system cannot properly reduce NOx emissions without DEF, the system activates a "Level 3" severe torque reduction (creep mode) to force the operator to repair the underlying issue.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum
- Steiger
- Puma
- Axial-Flow combines (8230 series)
- self-propelled windrowers
Check the cause
Connect a diagnostic tool and check for other active root cause fault codes generated at the same time (e.g., DEF pump pressure too low, DEF injector circuit faults, or DEF tank level sensor errors).
Verify the DEF tank is not empty and that the fluid is not contaminated with dirt, debris, or water.
Inspect all DEF lines for leaks, kinks, or severe DEF crystallization (white crust) which can block fluid flow.
Use the diagnostic tool to perform an actuator test on the DEF dosing module/pump to verify it is attempting to build pressure and dose fluid.
Repair steps
Identify root component
Using the concurrent fault codes found during diagnostics, pinpoint the failing component in the DEF delivery system (usually the DEF injector, DEF supply pump, or a clogged filter).
Clean or replace DEF injector
Remove the DEF injector from the exhaust stream and inspect the nozzle. If it is heavily crystallized or clogged, clean it with warm water or replace the injector.
Service DEF filter
If the DEF filter has not been changed at its regular service interval, locate the DEF supply pump module and replace the internal DEF filter cartridge.
Clear DEF lines
Flush or replace any DEF lines that are blocked by crystallized fluid.
Clear codes and validate
Once the root cause is repaired, clear the fault codes. Perform a validation test run by running the engine under load so the NOx sensors can verify the SCR system is dosing correctly, which will turn off the Level 3 creep mode.
