F-5840-00 - ECU

Case IH F-5840-00 - ECU – ECM / ECU / VCM: SCR Inducement: Level 3 (creep mode), triggered by DEF/AdBlue dosing interruption fault

Issue description

The engine's Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system has detected a physical or electrical interruption in the delivery (dosing) of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). Because the emissions system cannot function without DEF, the system enforces a 'Level 3 Inducement,' which severely limits engine torque and speed (creep mode) to force the operator to repair the emissions fault.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Farmall Tractors (40-45-50 CVT, 115U)
  • Case IH Steiger Tractors (350, 400, 450, 500, 550, 600)
  • Case IH T8 Series Tractors (T8.275 through T8.420 CVT)
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines (240 Series, 5130)
  • Case Construction Equipment (N-Series TLBs, 580N / 590SN Backhoes)

Check the cause

  1. Check for root-cause active faults that trigger the dosing interruption. Common culprits include DTC-377A / SPN-14202 (DEF/AdBlue dosing valve is blocked) or DTC-354A (DEF/AdBlue general pressure check failure).

  2. Inspect the DEF/AdBlue dosing valve actuator circuit. Look for short circuits to ground or battery voltage on the high or low side drivers (which will log codes like 17648, 17649, or 17650).

  3. Check the DEF/AdBlue supply module pump motor for over-temperature conditions (fault 19748) or pressure drops when the dosing valve is open (fault 19541).

  4. Verify the DEF/AdBlue tank level is adequate and check the supply module filters for clogs, which can restrict dosing pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Emergency Move (If Stranded)

If the machine is immobilized in creep mode, command an emergency re-start. This allows 30 seconds of operation without power loss to move the machine to a safe service area before the engine automatically reduces back to low idle speed.

  2. Resolve Electrical Shorts

If diagnostic checks revealed a short circuit in the dosing valve actuator, repair the wiring harness between the ECM and the DEF dosing valve.

  3. Clear Blockages / Replace Valve

If the dosing valve is physically blocked (DTC-377A), clean the DEF metering unit/dosing valve. If it cannot be cleared or has an internal failure, replace the DEF/AdBlue Dosing Valve.

  4. Replace Filters

Replace the DEF/AdBlue supply module filters (this is also a standard maintenance item required every 1500 hours).

  5. Inducement Validation

After the physical repair is complete, you must activate the 'Inducement Validation Restart mode' (associated with code 19809). This performs a full power restart to allow the ECU to verify the dosing system is functional, which will clear the Level 3 creep mode.
