Case IH F-5840-16 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): SCR Inducement: Level 1 (Torque reduction), triggered by DEF/AdBlue dosing interruption fault.

Issue description

The engine control system has detected a failure or interruption in the delivery of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/AdBlue) into the exhaust stream. Because the emissions system cannot reduce NOx without DEF, the system triggers a Level 1 inducement, automatically reducing engine torque to force the operator to address the root cause of the dosing failure.

Check the cause

  1. Check the DEF/AdBlue tank level and verify fluid quality using a refractometer to ensure it meets ISO 22241 standards (32.5% urea) and is not contaminated.

  2. Inspect the DEF dosing valve (injector) on the exhaust for blockages, urea crystallization, or physical damage.

  3. Check the DEF supply module (pump) and lines for leaks, blockages, or pressure drops.

  4. Inspect the DEF tank heater and line heaters, as failed heaters in cold weather will prevent DEF from thawing and cause a dosing interruption.

  5. Check the wiring harnesses and connectors to the DEF dosing unit and supply module for damage, corrosion, or short circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Identify Root Cause

    Connect a diagnostic tool (like CNH EST) and read all active fault codes. Look for the specific code that triggered the dosing interruption (e.g., a code for a blocked dosing valve, pump failure, or temperature sensor fault).

  2. Repair the Root Cause

    Perform the necessary physical repair based on the root cause code (e.g., replace the blocked DEF dosing valve, repair damaged wiring, replace the DEF pump, or drain and refill contaminated DEF fluid).

  3. Clear Codes

    Clear the root cause fault code using the diagnostic tool.

  4. System Validation

    Perform an SCR system validation test via the diagnostic tool, or run the engine under load to allow the ECU to verify the dosing system is functioning correctly.

  5. Automatic Inducement Clearing

    According to FPT/Case IH service documentation, no direct intervention is necessary for the 5840-16 fault itself. The inducement code will clear automatically once the root cause is resolved and validated by the ECU.
