Case IH F-5841-03 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF/AdBlue quality sensor internal failure (Short circuit to battery error)
Issue description
The diagnostic system has detected that the voltage from the DEF quality sensor circuit is above normal or shorted to a high source (battery voltage). This prevents the system from accurately reading the concentration and quality of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (reagent), which can trigger an SCR inducement (engine derate or creep mode).
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow® Combines
- Case IH Steiger
- Case IH Magnum
- Case IH Farmall series tractors (e.g., Farmall 40-45-50 CVT)
Check the cause
Disconnect the DEF quality sensor harness and check for damaged wires, pushed-back pins, corrosion, or water ingress inside the connectors.
Check for any damaged or loose machine grounds. Test the wiring harness for a direct short circuit to the battery (voltage above normal) on the sensor's power stage or actuator relay.
Verify that the DEF tank is adequately filled and not frozen.
Use a DEF refractometer (e.g., tool part number 88890105) to verify that the DEF fluid itself is at an acceptable concentration (32.5% urea), ruling out actual bad fluid causing erratic sensor behavior.
Repair steps
Safety First
Stop the engine and let the aftertreatment system cool completely before starting work. Do not start the engine during the service procedures.
Resolve Wiring Issues
If the diagnostic checks reveal a short to the battery in the wiring harness, repair or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact and the voltage is correct at the connector, the DEF/AdBlue quality sensor has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced. (Note: On many Case IH machines, the quality sensor is integrated into the DEF tank level sending unit).
Clear and Verify
After replacing the sensor or repairing the harness, clear the fault codes from the ECU.
System Test
Start the engine and run it on high idle (1000 RPM or higher) for at least 2 minutes to allow the aftertreatment system to initialize and verify that the fault code does not return.
