Case IH F-5841-04 - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU) / SCR Controller: Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Quality Malfunction - Voltage Below Normal or Shorted to Low Source
Issue description
The control module is detecting a voltage reading from the DEF/AdBlue quality sensor that is below the acceptable minimum threshold. This is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground within the sensor's internal circuitry (often the internal temperature sensor component) or a short in the wiring harness connecting the sensor to the ECU. A known failure point on these machines is ammonia gas from the DEF fluid traveling up into the sensor housing and corroding the internal circuit board, leading to this exact short-circuit failure.

Check the cause
Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connectors at the DEF quality sensor (located on the DEF tank header) for chafing, moisture intrusion, or bent pins.
Circuit Testing: Use a multimeter to test the wiring between the sensor connector and the ECM/DCU for a short to ground. If the harness tests good, the short is internal to the sensor.
Visual Sensor Inspection: Check the sensor housing for signs of ammonia gas intrusion or internal corrosion, which is the leading cause of internal circuit board failure.
Fluid Check: While an FMI 04 code is an electrical hardware fault, it is always best practice to verify the DEF tank is free of severe contamination (water, diesel, debris) which can damage the sensor probe.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn the machine's key switch to the OFF position and wait at least 2 minutes. This allows the DEF pump to complete its purge cycle and the DCU to fully power down and save data.
Drain Tank (If Necessary)
Depending on the mounting location of the DEF header on your specific model, you may need to drain the DEF tank to safely remove the assembly without spilling fluid.
Disconnect Wiring
Disconnect the electrical harness from the DEF quality sensor/header unit.
Remove Sensor
Unbolt and carefully remove the faulty DEF quality sensor or the entire DEF header assembly from the top/bottom of the DEF tank.
Install New Part
Install the new DEF quality sensor/header unit, ensuring the sealing gasket or O-ring is properly seated to prevent leaks. Secure the mounting hardware.
Reconnect
Reconnect the electrical connector to the new sensor.
Refill
Refill the tank with fresh, clean Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
Clear Codes
Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH EST) to clear the F-5841-04 fault code. Run the machine and perform an SCR system test to verify the code does not return and the system is dosing properly.
