Case IH F-5841-31 - ECU – ECU: SCR Inducement Level 3 DEF Quality
Issue description
This fault indicates that the emissions system has detected substandard or contaminated Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/AdBlue). Because the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system cannot properly reduce exhaust emissions with poor-quality fluid, the system has escalated to a Level 3 Inducement (Creep Mode). In this state, the machine experiences a severe engine power loss and speed limitation, forcing the engine to low idle. Emergency re-starts are available to allow 30 seconds of normal operation to move the machine.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Farmall 115U
- Farmall 40-50 series CVT
Check the cause
Test the DEF/AdBlue using a DEF refractometer to test the fluid currently in the tank. Standard DEF should be exactly 32.5% urea.
Inspect the DEF tank for visual or olfactory signs of cross-contamination (e.g., diesel fuel, water, dirt, or debris).
Check for preceding warning codes, such as DTC 19799 (SCR Inducement: Warning, triggered by DEF/AdBlue Quality fault) or DTC 19788 (Dosing interruption).
Verify that the wiring harness and connector to the DEF tank header/quality sensor are intact and not damaged, as a faulty sensor can falsely trigger a poor quality reading.
Repair steps
Drain the System
If the DEF is degraded, diluted, or contaminated, completely drain the DEF tank.
Flush the Tank
Clean and flush the tank to ensure no contaminated fluid or residue remains.
Replace the Filter
Remove and replace the DEF pump supply filter, as contaminated fluid often compromises the filter element.
Refill
Fill the tank with fresh, certified ISO 22241 DEF/AdBlue.
Clear Codes
Connect the Case IH diagnostic service tool (EST) to the machine and clear the inactive fault codes.
Validation Restart
Perform the SCR Inducement Validation Restart procedure via the diagnostic tool. This forces the system to re-evaluate the DEF quality, verify the repair, and deactivate the Level 3 Creep Mode.
Parts you might need
(3)DEF / AdBlue Fluid
Must be certified ISO 22241.
DEF Pump Filter Element
Required whenever contaminated fluid is run through the dosing system.
DEF Tank Header / Quality Sensor Unit
Only replace if the diagnostic tests prove the sensor itself has failed and is falsely reporting bad fluid.
