Case IH F-628-02 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU EEPROM memory failure - EEPData1 block
Issue description
The control module has detected an internal hardware or software failure within its Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM). Specifically, the data within the "EEPData1" block is corrupted, unreadable, or has generated an invalid checksum.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum AFS Connect series tractors
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Steiger
- Optum
- Puma
Check the cause
Verify Programming Status: Check if the ECU is currently in a programming state or if a boot block was recently generated, as interrupted flashes or low voltage during programming can cause EEPROM checksum errors.
Clear and Retest: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and attempt to clear the fault code. Cycle the machine's power. If the code does not return, it may have been an intermittent memory glitch.
Software Reflash: If the code persists, attempt to re-flash or reprogram the ECU with the latest software calibration to see if the EEPROM block can be successfully overwritten and recovered.
Repair steps
Connect diagnostic tool
Connect the Case IH EST diagnostic tool to the machine's diagnostic port.
Read fault codes
Read all active and stored fault codes to confirm F-628-02 is the primary issue.
Clear fault code
Clear the fault code and cycle the ignition key.
Reprogram ECU
If the code immediately returns, attempt to reprogram the ECU.
Evaluate ECU hardware
If the ECU fails to take the programming, or if the F-628-02 code remains active after a successful flash, the ECU has suffered a permanent internal hardware failure in its EEPROM.
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the battery's negative terminal.
Remove ECU
Locate the Engine Control Unit, disconnect its wiring harnesses, and remove the mounting hardware.
Install replacement ECU
Install the replacement ECU and reconnect the harnesses.
Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery.
Program new ECU
Use the Case IH EST to program the new ECU with the correct machine software, input the injector trim codes, and perform any necessary system calibrations.
