F-630-31 - ECU

Case IH F-630-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - EEPROM erase error

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has encountered a critical internal hardware or software failure while attempting to erase a data block within its Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM).

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Clear the fault code using the diagnostic display or Electronic Service Tool (EST). Shut down the tractor, wait for the ECU to power down completely, and restart the machine to see if the code returns.

  2. Ensure the ECU has a good connection to the battery and is properly grounded to rule out low voltage or a floating ground causing memory glitches.

  3. Inspect the ECU connectors (specifically the main power/ground pins) and the wiring harness for any signs of damage, corrosion, or poor connection.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery

    This prevents electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the Engine Control Unit

It is located on the side of the engine block.

  3. Unplug the ECU wiring harness connectors

Carefully release the locking levers on the connectors and unplug them.

  4. Remove the defective ECU

Unbolt the defective ECU from its mounting bracket and remove it from the machine.

  5. Install the replacement ECU

Place the new ECU and secure the mounting bolts.

  6. Reconnect the wiring harness connectors

Ensure the locking levers are fully seated and secure.

  7. Reconnect the battery

  8. Program the new ECU

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the ECU with the correct firmware and fuel calibration files specific to the tractor's Product Identification Number (PIN).

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM)

Look up the exact ECU part number using the machine's serial number (PIN) in the CNH parts catalog, as FPT engine controllers are hardware-specific to the emission tier and fuel system configuration.
