Case IH F-641-07 - ECU – ECU: eVGT motor effort too high

Issue description

The actuator motor controlling the turbocharger vanes is experiencing excessive resistance. The system detects that the electrical current (effort) required to move the actuator exceeds the maximum allowable tolerance, meaning the actuator is either mechanically blocked, experiencing too much friction, or failing internally.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fault is present and active using the Electronic Service Tool (EST)

  2. Check for a loose contact or undervoltage on the actuator power supply

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the eVGT actuator for continuity, shorts to ground, or damaged pins

  4. Disconnect the eVGT linkage (if equipped/accessible) to determine if the turbocharger vanes are sticking, mechanically blocked, or damaged

  5. Check if the actuator is reporting an overheating condition or an internal electronic failure over the CAN bus

Repair steps

  1. Verify fault code

    Turn off the ignition and connect the EST to verify the active fault code.

  2. Inspect fuse

    Inspect the dedicated fuse for the eVGT actuator (e.g., 20A mini fuse) and replace if blown.

  3. Inspect wiring and connections

    Ensure all connections are clean and tight from the ECU to the EVGT actuator. Test the harness for continuity and proper ground signals.

  4. Check turbocharger linkage

    Manually actuate the turbocharger variable geometry linkage. If the linkage is binding or blocked (often due to heavy soot buildup or internal failure), the turbocharger assembly must be cleaned or replaced.

  5. Replace eVGT actuator

    If the turbocharger vanes move freely but the fault persists, the eVGT actuator itself is defective and must be replaced.

  6. Initialize and learn eVGT system

    After replacing the actuator or turbocharger, use the EST to perform an eVGT system initialization and learn procedure so the ECU can calibrate the actuator's minimum and maximum positions.

  7. Clear codes and test

    Clear all fault codes and test run the machine under load to ensure proper boost pressure and that the code does not return.
