Case IH F-641-16 - ECU – ECU: Turbo over speed failure under high ambient pressure conditions

Issue description

The turbocharger is spinning faster than the commanded threshold, or the VGT actuator is failing to properly regulate exhaust gas flow/boost pressure under high ambient atmospheric pressure conditions. This is often accompanied by high exhaust temperatures or overboost conditions.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Associated Fault Codes: Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for related codes such as SPN 102 (Intake Manifold Pressure/Overboost), SPN 1209 (Exhaust Pressure), or other SPN 641 actuator codes (like FMI 7 or 13).

  2. Inspect Electrical Connections: Check the VGT actuator wiring harness and connectors. Corroded electrical terminals or low battery voltage events are a leading cause of VGT communication errors.

  3. Check for Soot Interference: Inspect the VGT actuator sector gear and the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. Heavy soot buildup can cause the VGT vanes to stick, forcing the turbo into an overspeed condition.

  4. Verify Sensor Accuracy: Check the ambient air pressure sensor and exhaust temperature sensors to ensure they are not providing skewed readings to the ECU.

  5. Mechanical Linkage Test: Disconnect the actuator and verify if the turbine side of the VGT moves freely. If the sector gear binds, the issue is internal to the turbocharger; if it moves freely, the actuator is likely the culprit.

Repair steps

  1. Clear Restrictions

    If soot buildup is detected during diagnostics, clean the EGR valve and the VGT actuator mechanism.

  2. Repair Wiring

    Repair or replace any damaged or corroded pins in the VGT actuator harness.

  3. Replace the VGT Actuator

    If the mechanical linkage moves freely but the actuator fails to command the vanes properly, remove and replace the electronic VGT actuator.

  4. Perform VGT Calibration

    After replacing the actuator, you must use the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to perform a VGT learn/calibration procedure. Failure to clear previous learned values will result in immediate calibration faults.

  5. Replace the Turbocharger

    If the sector gear is seized, the turbo vanes are damaged, or the turbo has suffered a catastrophic overspeed failure (often accompanied by a loud pop and loss of power), the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Clear the ECU fault codes and perform a forced regeneration or a loaded test drive to verify boost pressures remain within commanded parameters.

    Replaced if diagnostic tests prove the sensor is reading out of calibration.
