Case IH F-641-19 - ECU – ECU: eVGT motor effort too high

Issue description

The Electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator is experiencing excessive physical resistance, is mechanically blocked, or is drawing too much electrical current while attempting to adjust the aerodynamic vanes inside the turbocharger.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fault is present and active using the Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  2. Inspect the eVGT linkage to see if it is disconnected, damaged, sticking, or blocked by soot buildup.

  3. Perform an electrical harness test: Turn ignition OFF, disconnect engine harness from ECU and eVGT actuator, and remove actuator relay. Turn ignition ON and check for voltage from Pin 4 to chassis ground (should be 0V; voltage indicates a short).

  4. Check the dedicated eVGT actuator fuse to see if high motor effort caused it to blow.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Binding

    Disconnect the actuator linkage from the turbocharger. Move the turbocharger vanes by hand to determine if the binding is inside the turbocharger housing (due to heavy soot/carbon buildup) or if the actuator itself is seized.

  2. Address the Turbocharger (if seized)

    If the vanes do not move freely, the turbocharger assembly will need to be cleaned or replaced.

  3. Replace the Actuator (if faulty)

    If the turbo vanes move freely but the actuator fails the electrical tests or is internally bound, unbolt the faulty eVGT actuator and install the replacement.

  4. Replace Fuses

    If the high motor effort blew the circuit protection, replace the 20A eVGT fuse.

  5. Relearn/Initialize

    Reconnect all harnesses. Use the EST to clear the fault codes. Cycle the key so the ECU can command the eVGT actuator to initialize and learn its position. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
