Case IH F-654-03 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Short circuit error of injector in cylinder 4
Issue description
The engine computer has detected an electrical short (either high side to ground or low side to battery) in the control circuit for the fuel injector on cylinder #4. When this occurs, the ECM typically disables the solenoid circuit for that injector to prevent damage, which will result in an engine misfire and a loss of power.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Austoft 9900 Sugarcane Harvesters
- Austoft A8000 Sugarcane Harvesters
- Austoft A8800 Sugarcane Harvesters
- Steiger series tractors
- Magnum series tractors
Check the cause
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position before disconnecting any modules
Inspect the main ECM connector and the valve cover pass-through connector for corrosion, loose terminals, or pushed-back pins
Using a multimeter, test the fuel injector circuit for cylinder #4 for a short to ground, a short to battery voltage, or an open circuit in the wiring harness
Check for bank failure codes (e.g., DTC 7216) to determine if the fault is isolated to cylinder 4 or if the entire injector bank is affected by a shared ground or broader harness failure
Repair steps
Harness Repair
If the multimeter indicates a short circuit in the wiring, repair or replace the affected section of the engine wire harness as required.
Injector Replacement
If the wiring harness and connectors test good, the short is likely internal to the injector solenoid itself. Remove the valve cover and replace the cylinder #4 electronic unit injector.
Injector Calibration
If the fuel injector is replaced, the new injector's specific calibration code (a four-digit number stamped on the injector body) must be programmed into the ECM using the dealer diagnostic software (CNH EST). Failing to program the code will result in a 'Check Programmable Parameters' fault.
Clear Codes
Clear the fault codes. Note that injector circuit failures are often stored as 'Permanent Fault Codes' in the ECU memory and may require a full repair confirmation over several operating cycles to completely clear from the history.
