F-654-05 - ECU

Case IH F-654-05 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / ECU A-095: Open load error of injector in cylinder 4 / Injector Cylinder #4 Needle Control Valve Circuit Open

Issue description

The engine controller has detected that the electrical current in the cylinder 4 fuel injector circuit is below normal, indicating an open circuit, a poor connection, or a failed injector solenoid coil.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Austoft 9900 sugarcane harvesters
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Magnum MX/TG Series Tractors
  • Steiger Tractors
  • Patriot Sprayers

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active codes (such as a general short-circuit on the injection cable bank 1) and address those first

  2. Verify the tractor's battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply; if it has, disconnect it and test for normal operation

  3. Inspect the engine wiring harness and injector connectors for physical damage, oil contamination, or DEF crystallization (using a UV blacklight)

  4. Check the injector circuit resistance at the ECU, then remove the valve cover and check resistance directly at the cylinder 4 injector connector (Y-064) to isolate harness vs. injector issues

  5. Perform an injector continuity test by disconnecting the harness at Y-064 and checking for continuity from pin 1 to chassis ground (there should be NO continuity)

  6. Perform an injector cut-out test using diagnostic software or physically swap the injector with another cylinder to verify if the fault follows the injector

Repair steps

  1. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks isolate the issue to the wiring, repair or replace the damaged section of the engine wiring harness/injector pigtail. Recheck the function after the harness is repaired.

  2. Injector Replacement

If the injector fails the continuity test (shows continuity to ground) or the fault follows the injector when swapped, the injector must be replaced.

  3. Reassembly

Reconnect the injector harness (Y-064) and reinstall the valve cover.

  4. Clear Codes and Test

Use the diagnostic tool to clear the inactive fault codes. Bring the engine to operating temperature and road test/run the machine at idle to verify the repair and ensure the code does not return.
