Case IH F03 – Transmission Controller: Medium/Reverse Synchronizer Not Calibrated Or A Bad Calibration
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected that the synchronizer responsible for the medium and reverse ranges has either lost its calibration values, failed to calibrate properly during a routine calibration, or is providing implausible position data.

Check the cause
Check battery voltage by starting the engine and running it at 2000 RPM to verify the alternator is supplying proper voltage to the transmission controller (low voltage can cause calibration failures)
Test the medium range clutch solenoid resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 (should be 8 to 11 Ohms)
Inspect the transmission wire harness for chafing, open circuits, or shorts to ground, particularly around the synchronizer and range potentiometers
Verify the signal outputs from the medium/reverse synchronizer potentiometer and the range potentiometer to ensure they are not faulty
Repair steps
Attempt Recalibration
Perform the standard transmission calibration procedure (refer to the specific model's CCU - H1 Calibration procedures). Often, a simple recalibration will clear the F03 code if it was triggered by a software glitch or minor wear.
Test and Replace Solenoid
If the error code is still displayed after attempting calibration, disconnect the medium range clutch solenoid and test its resistance. If the resistance is outside the 8 - 11 Ohms range, remove and replace the solenoid.
Inspect Potentiometers
If the solenoid is good, test the medium/reverse synchronizer potentiometer and the range potentiometer. Replace them if they have dead spots or fail to return a smooth voltage sweep.
Mechanical/Hydraulic Inspection
If all electrical components (harness, solenoids, potentiometers) test good and calibration still fails, the transmission must be inspected for a mechanical or hydraulic fault (e.g., a physically damaged synchronizer, stuck valve, or internal hydraulic leak).
Final Calibration
After replacing any faulty components, you must successfully complete the transmission calibration procedure to clear the code and restore normal operation.
