F12

Case IH F12 – Transmission / EDC (Electronic Draft Control) Controller: Clutch Potentiometer Voltage Above Valid Range

Issue description

This code indicates that the signal voltage returning from the clutch pedal potentiometer (rotary position sensor) to the controller is higher than the programmed maximum threshold. This typically points to a short to power in the sensor wiring, a loss of the sensor ground, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175

Check the cause

  1. Wiring & Connector Check: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the clutch pedal potentiometer for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion. Verify the sensor ground is intact.

  2. Controller Reset Check: Turn the key switch to the 'ON' position, disconnect the clutch potentiometer, and then re-connect it.

  3. Mechanical Linkage: Ensure the clutch pedal linkage is not physically binding or over-extending the rotary sensor past its normal physical stop.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor

Park the tractor on level ground, lower all equipment to the ground, and apply the handbrake.

  2. Secure tractor

Place all shift levers in neutral and block the wheels (front and rear) to prevent unexpected tractor movement.

  3. Initiate calibration

Press and hold the High and Low range buttons simultaneously, then start the engine.

  4. Release buttons

When 'CAL' appears in the transmission display, release the High and Low range buttons.

  5. Set engine speed

Set the engine speed to 1200 ERPM (± 100).

  6. Press clutch

Press the clutch pedal. The transmission is now ready for calibration.

  7. Complete calibration

Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the clutches (the display will show numbers increasing as it calibrates, and will display 'SOC' during the process and 'END' to signify completion).
