Case IH F1C – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Clutch C Solenoid Open Circuit Or Short To Ground
Issue description
The control module has detected a break in the electrical path (open circuit) or a wire touching the chassis/ground (short to ground) on the circuit that powers the Clutch C solenoid. When this occurs, the controller disables the solenoid to prevent electrical damage, which results in the loss of the specific transmission gears that rely on Clutch C to engage.

Check the cause
Check system voltage to verify the tractor's battery voltage is sufficient, as low voltage can cause false clutch solenoid codes.
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Clutch C solenoid on the transmission control valve block for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires.
Disconnect the Clutch C solenoid and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out terminals.
Measure resistance across the solenoid's pins with a multimeter; infinite resistance indicates an internal open circuit, and zero resistance to the body indicates a short to ground.
Check the continuity of the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the Transmission Controller pins to isolate a broken wire if the solenoid tests good.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Solenoid
Access the transmission external controls on the transmission housing. Identify the Clutch C solenoid valve (refer to your specific model's service manual diagram to distinguish it from Clutches A, B, D, and E).
Remove the Faulty Component
Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt or nut holding the solenoid in place, and carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve block. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid will leak.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Slide it into the valve block and torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic tests pointed to the harness rather than the solenoid, splice and heat-shrink the broken wire, or replace the damaged connector pigtail.
Reassembly and Calibration
Reconnect the battery and start the tractor. Clear the stored F1C fault code. Crucial step: You must perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure using the tractor's H-Menu or a diagnostic tool so the controller can learn the fill times for the new solenoid.
