F1E

Case IH F1E – Transmission Controller / Processor Module: Clutch E Solenoid Open Circuit Or Short To Ground

Issue description

The controller has detected that the circuit for the "Clutch E" Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) solenoid is either broken (open circuit) or shorted to the ground. When this code is active, the transmission controller will typically disable the affected clutch to prevent damage.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • Maxxum
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • MXU Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness from the Clutch E PWM solenoid back to the transmission processor module using a multimeter

  2. Inspect the harness for physical breaks (open circuit) or rubbed wires touching the chassis (short to ground)

  3. Disconnect the PWM solenoid from the harness and measure the coil resistance (should be approximately 10 ohms at 20°C)

  4. Perform a current test to verify the solenoid reads 0 mA when the clutch is off and approximately 750 mA when commanded on

Repair steps

  1. Wiring Repair

If the multimeter test reveals a short or open circuit in the harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring.

  2. Solenoid Replacement

If the wiring is intact but the PWM solenoid fails the resistance test (does not measure ~10 ohms), the Clutch E PWM solenoid valve must be replaced.

  3. Transmission Calibration

If the PWM solenoid valve is replaced, a mandatory transmission clutch calibration must be performed. The service manual notes that installing a new solenoid will noticeably deteriorate shift quality and clutch featherability until the controller is recalibrated to the new valve's electrical characteristics.
