Case IH F1H – Transmission Controller (TRANS) / Universal Control Module (UCM): High Range Solenoid Open Circuit Or Short To Ground

An electrical failure in the circuit responsible for the transmission's high-range clutch solenoid. The system has detected that the electrical path to the solenoid is either broken (open circuit) or the voltage is bleeding off directly to the chassis (short to ground), which typically disables high-range gear engagement.

   Inspect the High Range Solenoid connector (C039 or X-643) and Transmission Controller/UCM connectors (X-950, X-954, and X-955) to ensure they are securely connected, undamaged, and pins are tight.

   Check inside the connectors for moisture, dirt, or corrosion that could cause a short to ground.

   Perform a harness continuity test using a multimeter between the transmission controller and the high range solenoid to check for a broken wire (open circuit) or continuity to the chassis (short to ground).

   Measure the resistance across the high range solenoid coil pins. An infinite reading indicates an internal open circuit, while a reading of zero (or continuity to the casing) indicates an internal short to ground.

   Safety First

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the transmission system before beginning work.

   Wiring Repair

   If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken wire or chafed harness shorting against the chassis, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the connector pigtail.

   Solenoid Replacement

   Locate the high range solenoid on the transmission valve body, disconnect the electrical harness, unbolt and remove the solenoid, clean the mounting surface, install the new solenoid valve and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications, then reconnect the electrical harness.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery, clear the stored F1H fault code from the Transmission Controller, and perform a full transmission/clutch calibration procedure.
