F1L

Case IH F1L – Transmission Controller (TCU / Trans): Low Range Solenoid Open Circuit Or Short To Ground

Issue description

Indicates a technical failure in the electrical circuit controlling the transmission's low range clutch solenoid valve. The controller has detected that the circuit is either broken (open) or the wiring/solenoid has shorted directly to the chassis ground.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • Case IH MXM Series (MXM 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (180 through 340, including Series 4)
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Optum Series
  • Case IH Vestrum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Farmall Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery voltage is sufficient, as low voltage can cause clutch solenoids to fail and trigger false codes

  2. Inspect the transmission extension harness connection to the main harness for a disconnected or loose plug

  3. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading directly to the low range solenoid valve for chafing, bare wires touching the frame, or broken wires

  4. Test the resistance of the low range solenoid coil using a multimeter to determine if the internal coil has failed

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoid

Identify the Low Range Solenoid Valve on the transmission control valve block.

  2. Disconnect and Inspect

Disconnect the electrical connector from the low range solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  3. Test the Circuit

With a multimeter, check the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the Transmission Controller for continuity. Test the wires against a known good ground to ensure there is no short circuit. Repair any damaged wiring.

  4. Test the Solenoid

If the wiring harness is intact, the fault is likely the solenoid itself. Measure the resistance across the solenoid terminals. If it reads out of specification (open or shorted), the solenoid must be replaced.

  5. Replace the Solenoid

Remove the retaining hardware and extract the faulty low range solenoid valve. Install the new solenoid valve. Note: Depending on the specific transmission model, OEM service manuals note that during installation, liquid gasket (such as Loctite 574) may need to be applied to specific mating surfaces.

  6. Recalibrate

Reconnect the wiring harness. Clear the transmission error codes using the tractor's H-Menu or diagnostic tool. After replacing transmission solenoids, a full transmission calibration procedure for the clutches and synchronizers is required.
