Issue description
This fault code indicates a mismatch between the transmission's operating state and the operator's command. It triggers when the transmission controller detects that the tractor is being commanded to shift into a gear or reach a ground speed that exceeds the maximum allowable limit while the creeper gear reduction unit is engaged. The system throws this code and restricts shifting as a protective measure to prevent catastrophic mechanical damage to the creeper gear assembly.

Check the cause
Verify Operator Usage: Confirm that the operator is not actually trying to road the tractor or shift into a high range with the creeper engaged. If they are, this is an operator error, not a mechanical failure.
Verify Physical Engagement: Check if the creeper gear is physically disengaged. If it is disengaged but the F23 code is still active, the transmission controller is receiving a false 'engaged' signal.
Electrical Circuit Testing: Use a multimeter to check the creeper engagement switch/sensor circuit. Look for an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to the 5V/12V reference voltage in the wiring harness between the switch and the transmission controller.
Repair steps
Disengage and Clear
Attempt to disengage the creeper gear via the cab controls. Cycle the tractor's key power. If the code clears and normal operation resumes, educate the operator on proper creeper gear speed limits.
Locate the Switch
If the code persists, locate the creeper engagement switch/sensor. Depending on the specific model, this is typically threaded into the transmission housing near the creeper reduction unit or attached to the mechanical linkage.
Inspect the Harness
Disconnect the wiring harness to the switch. Inspect the connector pins for dirt, moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.
Test the Switch
Perform a continuity test on the switch using a multimeter. Manually actuate the switch (or the creeper linkage) to see if the circuit opens and closes properly. If the switch is stuck in the closed position (falsely telling the ECU the creeper is engaged), the switch has failed internally and must be replaced.
Trace the Wiring
If the switch tests good, the issue lies in the wiring harness. Trace the wires back to the Transmission Controller. Look for pinch points, chafed insulation, or melted wires causing a short to ground or power. Repair any damaged sections of the harness.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect all components. Clear the fault codes using the tractor's H-Menu (diagnostic menu) or an electronic service tool. Test drive the tractor through various gears with the creeper disengaged to verify the F23 code does not return.
