F33

Case IH F33 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Transmission Controller: Synchronizer Did Not Disengage

Issue description

This fault code indicates a mechanical or electrical failure where the transmission's gear shift synchronizer failed to disengage during a gear change or shuttle shift. It is a critical transmission error that typically disables the affected gear range to prevent mechanical damage.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM Series
  • MXM120
  • MXM130
  • MXM140
  • Puma Series
  • 165
  • 180
  • 195
  • 210
  • 225
  • Steiger
  • Magnum
  • Farmall
  • JX series
  • TM Series
  • T7 Series
  • T7.175
  • T7.190
  • T7.210

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery voltage is sufficient; disconnect any external power supply or jump starter and test on the machine's own battery.

  2. Check for related codes such as F40, F41, or F42 (potentiometer voltage issues) or F24 (calibration required).

  3. Inspect wiring harnesses connecting the transmission controller to the shift solenoids and synchronizer potentiometers for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to the 5V/12V reference.

Repair steps

  1. Electrical Testing

Using a multimeter, test the synchronizer potentiometers and shift solenoids for proper resistance and voltage based on the OEM service manual specifications.

  2. Component Replacement (External)

If a potentiometer or solenoid is found to be shorted or returning out-of-range voltages, replace the faulty sensor/solenoid.

  3. Transmission Calibration

If no electrical faults are found, attempt to perform a full Semi-Powershift transmission calibration.

  4. Mechanical Inspection (Internal)

If the calibration fails or the F33 code immediately returns, the issue is a physical mechanical bind. The tractor will need to be split to access the transmission.

  5. Synchronizer Replacement

Inspect the internal synchronizer assemblies, shift forks, and clutch packs. Replace the sticking synchronizer rings, hubs, or damaged forks.

  6. Reassembly and Final Calibration

Once the mechanical repair is complete and the tractor is reassembled, you must perform a transmission calibration to teach the TCM the new engagement and disengagement points of the synchronizers.
