Case IH F36 – Transmission Controller (TCU) / Transmission Control Module: Synchronizer Disengaged Without Driver Initiation

Issue description

The transmission synchronizer has physically disengaged or lost its position without a command from the operator or the transmission controller.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the voltage and calibration of the synchronizer potentiometers (check for related codes F40-F45 indicating over-voltage, under-voltage, or out of range).

  2. Check the clutch disconnect switch to ensure it does not have an open circuit (which would trigger related code F37).

  3. Check the high range clutch solenoid by measuring the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 (should read between 8 and 11 Ohms).

  4. Verify if the transmission clutches and synchronizers have lost their calibration (related code F24 indicates all clutches and synchronizers require calibration).

Repair steps

  1. Test the Solenoid

    Using a multimeter, test the resistance across terminal 1 and terminal 2 of the high range clutch solenoid.

  2. Replace the Solenoid (if necessary)

    If the resistance indicated is not between 8 - 11 Ohms, remove and replace the high range clutch solenoid.

  3. Recalibrate the Transmission

    After replacing any transmission solenoids or synchronizer components, perform a full calibration of all transmission clutches and synchronizers.

  4. Clear Codes

    Clear the transmission error codes from the system. Clearing error codes without addressing the root cause or recalibrating may lead to ongoing problems.
