Case IH F54 – Transmission Controller / Electronic Draft Control (EDC) module: +5 Volt Reference Voltage Too Low
Issue description
The tractor's control modules supply a steady 5-volt reference signal to various sensors (such as potentiometers and switches) to read their positions. This code triggers when the voltage on this reference circuit drops below the acceptable threshold, which is almost always caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, a failed sensor pulling the voltage down, or an internal failure within the controller itself.

Check the cause
Check battery voltage to ensure it is sufficient, as low system voltage can cause erratic controller behavior.
Perform Sensor Isolation (The 'Unplug' Test): Disconnect sensors (e.g., clutch pedal potentiometer, synchronizer potentiometers, shuttle lever switches) one by one. If the 5V reference voltage returns to normal on your multimeter after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor has an internal short.
Inspect the wiring harness for chafing, rubbing, or pinched wires that could be shorting the 5V circuit to the tractor's chassis (ground).
Test the 5V output directly at the Transmission Controller pins with the harness disconnected. If the controller is not outputting 5V internally, the ECU itself has failed.
Repair steps
Resolve the Short
Based on the diagnostics, repair the damaged wiring harness section, or replace the shorted sensor (most commonly the clutch potentiometer or a synchronizer potentiometer).
Replace Controller
If the controller failed the output test, replace the Transmission Control Module.
Perform Mandatory Calibration (H1)
If a potentiometer, PWM solenoid valve, or the microprocessor/controller has been replaced, or if the non-volatile memory has been reset, you must perform a Transmission/EDC Calibration. Place all shift levers in neutral, block the wheels (front and rear), and set the engine speed to 1200 RPM (±100). Hold the High and Low range buttons while starting the engine until 'CAL' appears in the transmission display, then proceed with the on-screen prompts to calibrate the clutches and synchronizers.
