Case IH F79 – Transmission Controller and Engine Controller: Engine RPM Exceeds 3000 RPM.

The controller is receiving an engine speed signal from the generator (alternator) or the engine speed sensor that registers above 3000 RPM. This indicates an electrical anomaly, most commonly a failing alternator sending erratic AC ripple/noise through the tachometer signal wire, or a faulty engine speed sensor.

   Test the alternator output at idle and at 1,500 RPM. Look for erratic voltage or a failing diode leaking AC voltage into the tachometer signal wire.

   Inspect the RPM signal wire running from the alternator to the controller for chafing, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage.

   Check the engine speed sensor (crankshaft speed sensor) and its wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or a loose connection.

   Verify battery voltage. A weak battery or low system voltage can cause the CAN bus to drop out momentarily and sensors to reset, triggering false codes.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the ECUs.

   Address the Alternator (If Faulty)

   If your multimeter showed erratic voltage, AC ripple, or output below 13.8V during the diagnostic phase, remove the serpentine belt, unbolt the alternator, and replace it with a new OEM unit. Ensure the tachometer signal wire is securely fastened to the correct terminal (W or R).

   Replace the Engine Speed Sensor (If Alternator is Good)

   If the charging system is healthy, locate the engine speed sensor (crankshaft speed sensor) on the engine block. Unplug the wiring harness, remove the retaining bolt, and pull the sensor out. Install the new sensor and torque the bolt to OEM spec.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and monitor the instrument cluster tachometer. If the RPM reads smoothly and accurately, the electrical noise is resolved.

   Recalibrate (If Necessary)

   If the transmission was acting erratically due to the F79 code, you may need to perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure using the tractor's H-Menu.
