F81

Case IH F81 – Transmission Controller (TCU / Transmission ECU): Clutch Slipping

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected a slip in the transmission clutch pack. This is a mechanical or hydraulic failure warning, meaning the clutch is failing to hold the commanded gear under load.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM Series (120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Steiger
  • TM Series (TM115-TM165)
  • T6000
  • T7 Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify Fluid Levels: Check the transmission/hydraulic oil level and ensure the correct fluid is being used.

  2. Recalibrate Clutches: Run the transmission calibration procedure via the H-Menu. If the clutches are uncalibrated, the TCU cannot apply the correct engagement pressure.

  3. Test Solenoids and Valves: Check the transmission clutch solenoids for proper operation. Look for accompanying electrical fault codes (e.g., F1A through F1E for open/shorted clutch solenoids).

  4. Hydraulic Pressure Test: Test the hydraulic pressure at the clutch pressure switches. A drop in pressure is often caused by internal oil leakage through defective seals (O-rings on piping, pistons, or seal segments).

Repair steps

  1. Drain Fluid

Drain the transmission/hydraulic fluid from the tractor.

  2. Access the Transmission

Depending on the model (e.g., Maxxum vs. Steiger), split the tractor or remove the transmission housing to access the affected clutch pack.

  3. Inspect and Replace Seals

Inspect the internal piping, clutch pistons, and seal segments. Replace all defective O-rings and seals, as these are the primary cause of pressure drops leading to slip.

  4. Rebuild the Clutch Pack

Remove the burnt/worn friction discs and separator plates. Install a new clutch pack kit.

  5. Reassemble and Refill

Reassemble the transmission housing and refill with the OEM-specified hydraulic/transmission fluid.

  6. Final Calibration

You must perform a full transmission calibration using the tractor's electronic configuration menu so the TCU can learn the engagement points of the new clutch plates.
