Case IH F87 – Transmission Controller: Creeper Fails To Disengage

The transmission controller has commanded the creeper gear to disengage, but the system is not detecting the disengagement mechanically or electrically.

   Check the Cab Switch: Verify that the creeper on/off switch in the cab (and its linkage) is functioning properly and sending power down to the solenoid.

   Inspect the Creeper Potentiometer: Check for accompanying fault codes F88 (Creeper potentiometer short circuit to +8 or +12 Volts) or F89 (Creeper potentiometer open circuit or short to ground). If these are present, the potentiometer or its wiring is the culprit.

   Inspect the Creeper Solenoid: The creeper solenoid is located on the Transmission Control Valve (TCV) body. Because it hangs down somewhat unprotected, it can be struck by debris and mechanically stick.

   Test the Wiring Harness: Remove the controller cover from the rear of the tractor. Visually inspect the wiring harness from the transmission controller towards the solenoids under the cab for abnormal routing, wire damage, or short circuits.

   Measure Resistance: Disconnect the transmission controller connectors (e.g., C350 and C353) and measure the resistance of the creeper clutch solenoid circuit to ensure it is not shorted to power or ground.

   Mechanical Freeing (Temporary Check)

   If the solenoid is receiving power but not actuating, try lightly tapping the solenoid on the TCV with a hammer to see if it is mechanically stuck. If it frees up, the solenoid is failing and should be replaced.

   Replace the Faulty Component

   If the circuit test fails at the solenoid, replace the Creeper Clutch Solenoid on the transmission control valve. If the potentiometer is throwing F88/F89 codes, replace the Creeper Potentiometer.

   Perform a Transmission Calibration

   Ensure the transmission oil is warmed to at least 60°C (140°F) and engine speed is set to 1200 RPM or higher. Enter the tractor's 'H-Menu' (Calibration mode H1) by holding the upshift/downshift buttons while starting the tractor. Follow the dash display prompts to calibrate the synchronizers and clutch packs (C1 through C4). Turn the engine off to store the calibration values.
