FA1

Case IH FA1 – TCU: Low Range Clutch Solenoid Circuit Fault

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an electrical anomaly in the circuit responsible for operating the low range clutch solenoid. The system is seeing either a broken connection (open circuit) or a wire that is shorting out against the tractor chassis or ground. When this code is active, the controller typically disables the low range clutch to prevent transmission damage.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Turn the tractor ignition switch to the OFF position.

  2. Locate the low range clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block and disconnect its electrical connector.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across terminal 1 and terminal 2 on the solenoid itself.

  4. Evaluate resistance: The specification for a healthy solenoid is typically between 8 to 11 Ohms. If outside this range, the solenoid has failed internally.

  5. If the resistance is within the 8 to 11 Ohm spec, check the wiring harness between the solenoid connector and the Transmission ECU for continuity, chafing, or a short to positive voltage or ground.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Clean the area

Locate the transmission valve block and thoroughly clean the area around the low range clutch solenoid with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Remove the solenoid

Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil or cartridge in place.

  4. Extract the solenoid

Carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the transmission block. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out.

  5. Install new solenoid

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean OEM-spec transmission fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid into the valve block, ensuring the O-rings are not pinched.

  6. Reassemble components

Install and tighten the retaining hardware to the torque specifications outlined in your model service manual. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Test the repair

Clear the fault codes from the transmission controller. Start the tractor, check for leaks around the new solenoid, and test drive the machine to ensure the low range clutch engages smoothly without throwing the FA1 code.
