Case IH FA3 – Transmission Controller: High Range Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit Or Short To Ground
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for operating the high range clutch. Specifically, the circuit is either broken (open circuit) or the wiring has chafed and is touching the chassis/ground (short to ground). When this code is active, the high range clutch is typically disabled by the system to prevent damage.

Check the cause
Check battery voltage to ensure it is sufficient, as low voltage can cause clutch solenoids to fail to operate properly and trigger false codes.
Perform a solenoid resistance test by disconnecting the electrical connector at the high range clutch solenoid and measuring resistance across the coil terminals (should be 8 to 11 Ohms).
Test the wiring harness for continuity between the transmission controller (UCM/TCM) connector and the solenoid.
Check for voltage shorts by turning the ignition switch ON and measuring voltage between the solenoid connector pins and ground.
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors for physical damage, corrosion, or chafing that could cause an open circuit or a short to ground.
Repair steps
Isolate the Circuit
Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the high range clutch solenoid on the transmission hydraulic control valve block.
Test and Verify
Perform the 8-11 Ohm resistance test on the solenoid. If the reading falls outside this specification, the solenoid has failed internally.
Replace the Solenoid
If the solenoid is faulty, clean the area around the valve block to prevent contamination. Unbolt the faulty high range clutch solenoid (PMV valve) and install the replacement.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the solenoid tested fine but the harness failed the continuity/short tests, trace the wiring back to the TCM and repair the broken or chafed wire.
Reassemble and Power Up
Reconnect all electrical connectors and the battery.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Use the tractor's H-Menu or a diagnostic service tool to clear the transmission error codes. After replacing a transmission clutch solenoid, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure to ensure smooth shifting and proper engagement.
