Case IH FA4 – Transmission Controller (TCM) / EDC: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit Or Short To Ground

The transmission controller measures the current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit; if the current draw is lower than the expected limit, it triggers this code, meaning the circuit is open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply.

   Ensure the tractor is safely secured and cannot move while performing tests.

   Check if the reverse clutch solenoid is being energized when the tractor is commanded to reverse.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission Controller to the Reverse Clutch Solenoid for severed wires, chafed wires touching the chassis, or a loss of power supply.

   Inspect the electrical connectors at the solenoid and the controller for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture.

   Secure the Machine

   Park the tractor on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and ensure the engine is off before inspecting the transmission housing.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or a short to ground in the harness, repair or replace the affected wiring section.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the wiring and power supply are intact but the controller still detects an open/short circuit, the reverse clutch solenoid valve itself has failed internally and must be replaced. Remove the faulty solenoid from the transmission valve block and install the new OEM replacement.

   Perform Calibration

   According to the MXM Series Calibration Guide, if a PWM solenoid valve is replaced, a Transmission/EDC Calibration setup procedure is strictly required to ensure proper shift quality and clutch featherability.
