Case IH FAE – Transmission Controller / TCU: Clutch E Solenoid Open Circuit Or Short To Ground
Issue description
The transmission controller detects that the circuit for the Clutch E PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) solenoid is either broken (open) or shorted directly to the chassis ground.

Check the cause
Check battery voltage to ensure the battery is fully charged and the alternator is functioning properly, as low system voltage can trigger false transmission codes.
Inspect the transmission extension harness and the main harness connections for corrosion, moisture ingress, or stretched/chafed wires leading to the transmission valve block.
Using a multimeter, check the resistance of the Clutch E solenoid circuit and test for continuity to ground to confirm if the short is in the wiring harness or internal to the solenoid itself.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on level ground, place all shift levers in neutral, and block the front and rear wheels.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission valve block and identify the Clutch E solenoid (often labeled or color-coded depending on the specific transmission variant).
Replace or Repair
If the wiring harness is damaged, repair the open/shorted wire. If the solenoid tests faulty (internal open or short), remove the retaining hardware and replace the Clutch E PWM solenoid valve.
Reassemble
Install the new solenoid. Apply a couple of drops of thread sealant (e.g., Loctite 542) to the retaining screws if applicable. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Perform Transmission Calibration
Enter calibration mode (usually by holding the High and Low range buttons while starting the engine) and follow the on-screen prompts to recalibrate the clutch engagement. This is required whenever a PWM solenoid valve has been replaced, the non-volatile memory has been reset, or a mechanical repair has been effected.
