Case IH FB4 – Transmission Controller: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Over Voltage

The transmission controller has detected that the voltage on the reverse clutch solenoid circuit is too high. This condition typically indicates that the circuit is shorted to a +12V power source, either within the wiring harness or due to an internal short inside the solenoid coil itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the reverse clutch solenoid for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted areas that could cause a short to a +12V power wire.

   Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid and inspect the connector for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the circuits.

   Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the reverse clutch solenoid coil. An abnormally low reading indicates an internal short in the solenoid.

   With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key ON and measure the voltage at the harness connector to verify if the short to +12V is originating from the transmission controller itself.

   Safety First

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing and identify the reverse clutch solenoid.

   Remove the Faulty Component

   If the diagnostic checks point to a failed solenoid, clean the area around the valve block thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Unbolt and remove the faulty reverse clutch solenoid.

   Install the New Part

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block. Torque the retaining bolts to factory specifications.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the solenoid and reconnect the tractor's battery.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key ON and use the tractor's H-Menu or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive FB4 fault code.

   Perform Transmission Calibration

   According to the OEM service manual, a full transmission calibration procedure must be performed anytime a PWM solenoid valve has been replaced, the non-volatile memory has been reset, or a mechanical repair has been effected.
