Case IH FBE – Transmission Controller (TCM): Clutch E Solenoid Over Voltage

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an excessive voltage condition (typically a short circuit to +12V) on the electrical circuit that controls the Clutch E solenoid. When this fault is active, the transmission controller will disable the affected clutch to prevent damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check Battery and Charging Voltage: Ensure the tractor's alternator is not overcharging the system, which can trigger over-voltage codes across multiple solenoids.

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness running from the Transmission Controller to the Clutch E solenoid. Look for rubbed or melted wires causing a short to +12V or a short to another power wire.

  3. Test the Solenoid: Measure the current/resistance of the Clutch E solenoid. According to diagnostic channel data, the solenoid current should read 0 when off and approximately 750 mA when commanded on. An internal short in the solenoid coil can cause the over-voltage/short-circuit fault.

  4. Check Controller Connections: Ensure the pins at the TCM are clean, tight, and free of corrosion.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve the Electrical Fault

    Repair any damaged wiring in the transmission harness. If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails the resistance/current test, replace the Clutch E PWM solenoid valve on the transmission control valve block.

  2. Clear the Code

    Depress the clutch pedal to re-enable the transmission and see if the code clears after the physical repair.

  3. Perform Transmission Calibration

    Any time a PWM solenoid valve is replaced, a wiring repair is made, or the controller memory is reset, the transmission clutches must be recalibrated. Ensure the transmission oil temperature is above 10°C (50°F). Place all shift levers in neutral and apply the parking brake. Hold the High and Low range buttons and start the engine. 'CAL' will appear on the transmission display. Set the engine speed to 1200 RPM (± 100 RPM). Follow the H-Menu (H1) prompts to complete the automated calibration for the clutch packs.
