Case IH FC1 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Medium Range Clutch Not Calibrated
Issue description
This code indicates that the transmission controller lacks the necessary calibration data (fill time and engagement pressure) for the medium range clutch. This condition typically occurs when a new controller is installed on the tractor, if a previous calibration procedure was interrupted, or if the calibration failed due to an underlying mechanical or electrical issue.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MXM
- Case IH MXM Series (MXM 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH Puma Series
Check the cause
Check Transmission Fluid Temperature: The transmission oil must be warmed up to the optimal range between 60°C and 105°C (140°F+).
Check for Active Hard Faults: Look for other active transmission codes (e.g., Code 110) that indicate the medium range clutch solenoid or its wiring has failed open or shorted to ground.
Verify Engine RPM and Pedal Switches: Ensure the engine RPM is stable, the shuttle lever is in neutral, and the clutch pedal is fully released.
Safety Check: Ensure the tractor is parked on a flat surface, free of obstacles, with the parking brake engaged, as the machine may move unexpectedly during calibration.
Repair steps
Warm transmission fluid
Start the engine and warm the transmission fluid to at least 60°C (140°F).
Prepare tractor for calibration
Park on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and shift the shuttle lever to neutral.
Access Configuration Menu
Turn the key switch to the ON position and, within ten seconds, press and hold the Enter key on the keypad to access the Configuration Menu (CONFIG MENU).
Select TCU
Use the down arrow key to highlight TCU (Transmission Control Unit) and press Enter.
Navigate to TRANS SETUP
Navigate through the ETC MENU to the TRANS SETUP (Transmission Setup) screen.
Select Clutch Calibration
Select Cltch Cal (Clutch Calibration) and press Enter.
Verify oil temperature
The screen will display the current oil temperature. If it is within the 60°C - 105°C range, press Enter to proceed.
Cycle medium range clutch
Follow the on-screen prompts to allow the controller to cycle the medium range clutch. The tractor will automatically adjust the solenoid duty cycle to learn the clutch fill times.
Verify calibration success
If the calibration completes successfully, the FC1 code will clear. If the calibration fails, the display will output a specific 'U' code (calibration error) or a standard fault code indicating a failed solenoid, damaged wiring harness, or internal hydraulic leak.
