Case IH FCE – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Clutch E Not Calibrated
Issue description
The transmission controller has not successfully completed the calibration sequence for the "E" clutch pack. This results in poor clutch performance for the uncalibrated clutch, and the transmission may disable certain functions or require the operator to depress the clutch pedal or shift to neutral to re-enable the transmission.

Check the cause
Attempt to run the automated transmission calibration procedure to see if the code clears.
During calibration, watch for specific calibration failure codes (e.g., U19 for cold oil, U21/U22 for incorrect engine RPM) that might be preventing Clutch E from calibrating.
Pressure test the E clutch circuit. The target pressure should be approximately 16 bar.
If pressure is low, check for clutch piston seal leakage or hydraulic leakage from the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) valve to the piston.
Inspect the PWM solenoid for Clutch E for electrical faults, short circuits, or sticking.
Repair steps
Warm Up and Calibrate
Ensure the transmission oil temperature is above 10°C (preferably at operating temperature) and engine RPM is within the specified range, then perform the transmission calibration procedure.
Clean the PWM Valve
If calibration fails and throws an error for Clutch E, locate the transmission control valve block. Remove the PWM valve assembly for Clutch E.
Solvent Wash
Clean the complete PWM valve assembly (less the solenoid) in a suitable cleaning solvent and thoroughly dry it. Do not disassemble the PWM valve further to clean it.
Inspect for Damage
Carefully examine the valve cover and components for hairline cracks or damage. If damage is found, do not attempt to repair it; the valve must be replaced.
Reinstall and Retest
Coat the valve components and O-rings with clean transmission oil (e.g., Case IH Akcela Nexplore Fluid) and reinstall. Tighten retaining bolts to 27 Nm. Attempt the calibration procedure again.
Replace the PWM Valve
If the performance of the valve is still suspect, no contaminant was found, and the solenoid tests within specification, replace the PWM valve with a new one.
Internal Transmission Repair
If a new PWM valve and successful hydraulic pressure tests (approx. 16 bar) do not resolve the issue, the fault is likely a mechanical failure or severe piston seal leakage within the transmission. The transmission will need to be dismantled for internal repair.
Clear Codes
Once the mechanical or hydraulic issue is rectified and calibration is successful, clear the FCE error code from the TCU.
