Case IH HJ – Header Height Control (HHC) Module / Header Controller: Short to 12V - lower solenoid driver
Issue description
The control module is detecting a 12-volt signal on the driver circuit for the header's lower solenoid when it should not be present. This is typically caused by a wiring harness shorting to a power source, a failed solenoid coil that has shorted internally, or a failure within the controller's internal driver. When this code is active, the system will typically trigger a 'Halt' state for the header lowering function to prevent uncommanded movement.

Check the cause
Visual Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the header lift/lower valve block back to the Header Controller. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the combine frame, or melted insulation that could cause the solenoid signal wire to short to a 12V power wire.
Connector Check: Disconnect the lower solenoid connector and the main header harness disconnect. Inspect for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the 12V supply to the driver circuit.
Solenoid Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, check the resistance across the pins of the lower solenoid coil. If the resistance is out of specification (typically reading as a dead short/0 ohms), the coil is internally shorted.
Isolate the Controller: Disconnect the harness at the solenoid. Turn the key ON and check the voltage at the harness connector. If 12V is still present on the driver wire with the solenoid unplugged and the function not commanded, the short is in the wiring harness or the HHC module itself.
Repair steps
Safely secure the machine
Lower the header completely to the ground. If it cannot be lowered, raise it and engage the mechanical feeder house cylinder safety stops. Turn off the combine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the valve block
Locate the header lift/lower hydraulic valve stack (typically located on the left-hand side of the combine near the feeder house).
Identify the lower solenoid
Identify the specific solenoid for the 'lower' function (often designated as Solenoid #2 on the stack).
Replace the solenoid coil (if tested faulty)
Unplug the electrical connector from the lower solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the cartridge and torque the retaining nut to OEM spec (do not overtighten, or you will distort the cartridge).
Repair wiring (if applicable)
If the harness was chafed, cut out the damaged section, solder in a new section of wire, and seal it with dual-wall adhesive heat shrink.
Recalibrate the Header
Reconnect the battery. Turn the combine on and clear the fault codes. You must perform a Header Calibration via the A-post monitor/instrumentation so the Header Controller can learn the electrical signature of the new solenoid.
