Case IH Hu – Header Control Module: Header lift solenoid circuit failure

Issue description

The controller has detected an improper voltage return or resistance (either an open wire, a short to ground, or a short to a 12V power source) on the circuit that commands the hydraulic valve to raise or lower the header.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Maxxum
  • 7200/8900 series Magnum
  • 2144
  • 2166
  • 2188
  • 2344
  • 2366
  • 2377
  • 2388
  • 2577
  • 2588

Check the cause

  1. Perform an operator presence check: ensure someone is sitting in the seat to close the operator proximity switch, as the system will not send 12 volts to the header solenoids if the seat switch is open.

  2. Perform a solenoid resistance test: disconnect the wiring harness at the header lift valve and use a multimeter to check the resistance of the solenoids (across pins 7 and 11 for the raise solenoid, and pins 7 and 15 for the lower solenoid).

  3. Perform a harness continuity test: if the solenoid is within specification, inspect the wiring harness between the header control module and the valve stack for rubbed wires causing a short to 12V or an open circuit.

  4. Check the header enable relay contacts, as a failed relay can interrupt the circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Safely secure the machine

Lower the header completely to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure. Engage the parking brake and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the Header Lift Valve

The hydraulic valve stack is typically located on the left-hand side of the combine. Solenoid #1 is generally the header raise, and Solenoid #2 is the header lower.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic tests revealed a short or open wire in the harness, splice and repair the damaged section using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the harness section.

  4. Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)

If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid cartridge and slide the old coil off.

  5. Install New Parts

Slide the new 12V solenoid coil onto the valve cartridge and tighten the retaining nut. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Turn the ignition key on, clear the inactive fault codes from the instrumentation display, and test the header raise/lower functions to ensure the code does not return.
