ICU14005

Case IH ICU14005 – ICU: PTO Shaft Speed Data Error or Not Available

Issue description

The Instrument Control Unit (ICU) has detected that the PTO shaft speed data is either in an error state or not being received from the PTO speed sensor. This lack of valid speed data causes the control module to shut the system down as a precaution, leading to the PTO failing to engage or disengaging unexpectedly.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 340
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • MX80C
  • MX90C
  • MX100
  • MX100C
  • MX110
  • MX120
  • MX135
  • MX285
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active fault codes, particularly those related to the alternator or engine speed, which can affect PTO operation

  2. Verify engine RPM is sufficient (at least 800-900 RPM), as some models will not engage the PTO at low idle

  3. Check hydraulic/transmission fluid levels, as low fluid can cause the PTO to disengage, especially on inclines

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the PTO speed sensor for chafing, breaks, corrosion, or loose connections

  5. Test the PTO speed sensor resistance using a multimeter (expected range: 2700 to 3300 ohms)

  6. Check if the PTO shaft turns briefly upon engagement and then stops, which indicates the control module is not receiving a speed signal

  7. Inspect the alternator and fan belt; ensure the alternator is charging and the 'W' terminal is providing a stable engine speed signal

Repair steps

  1. Address basic faults

Correct any visible wiring damage, secure loose connectors, and ensure tractor fluid levels and engine RPM are within operating range.

  2. Replace PTO speed sensor

If sensor resistance is outside the 2700-3300 ohm range, replace it. Clean the mounting surface on the transmission housing. Consider using Teflon tape on the threads instead of the O-ring to allow the sensor to be threaded in slightly further for a better reading (critical air gap), then torque to manufacturer specifications.

  3. Repair alternator or belt

If the alternator 'W' terminal signal is erratic or absent, or if the fan belt is slipping, replace the faulty alternator or worn belt to restore the engine speed signal.

  4. Clear codes and calibrate

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. Perform a PTO calibration procedure if required by your specific model's operator manual.

  5. Verify repair

Operate the tractor and engage the PTO under normal conditions to confirm the fault code does not reappear and the PTO functions correctly.
