Case IH ICU14010 – ICU: PTO Controller Off Line
Issue description
The Instrument Control Unit (ICU) has lost communication with the Power Take-Off (PTO) controller via the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The PTO controller is not sending or receiving messages on the network, which can prevent the operator from engaging or operating the PTO system. The fault is logged by the ICU because it expects to see the PTO controller on the network but has detected its absence.

Check the cause
Inspect all fuses related to the ICU, transmission controller, and PTO controller to ensure none are blown.
Carefully inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors leading to the PTO controller (typically located near the rear of the tractor) for visible damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
Check CAN bus termination resistors: With power OFF, measure resistance between CAN High and CAN Low. A healthy bus reads ~60 Ohms. A reading of 120 Ohms indicates a missing or failed terminator. A reading significantly lower than 60 Ohms indicates a short or extra terminator. An open circuit reading suggests a break in the CAN wiring.
Check CAN bus voltages: With power ON (engine off), measure DC voltage relative to chassis ground. CAN High should be 2.5-3.5V; CAN Low should be 1.5-2.5V. Voltages outside of these ranges can indicate a short to power or ground in one of the CAN lines or a faulty controller pulling the voltage down.
Isolate the faulty component: If resistance or voltage is incorrect, disconnect controllers from the CAN bus one at a time. If resistance returns to normal after disconnecting the PTO controller, that controller or its connector is the likely source.
Repair steps
Address physical layer issues
Repair any issues found with fuses, wiring, or connectors. Ensure all connections are clean, secure, and free of corrosion.
Replace faulty CAN bus terminators
If a terminator is found to be faulty (indicated by a 120 Ohm reading on the bus), replace it. Case IH recommends using the updated 'cap style' terminator for better reliability.
Replace the PTO controller
If diagnostic steps point to the PTO controller itself being the issue (e.g., the CAN bus returns to normal when it is disconnected), replace the PTO control module.
Post-repair verification
Clear all fault codes. Run the tractor and operate the PTO system to ensure the ICU14010 fault code does not reappear. Perform a calibration of the PTO system if required after replacing components.
